Since my luck with computers had been so good lately, I new something was going to go wrong with this new build. The build went flawlessly, the machine powered up and everything showed up perfectly on the first try (very rare). When I tried to install Vista Ultimate x64 is when things started going down hill.
The install seemed to be going but once the machine did its first reboot, I encountered my first problem. Windows tried to boot for the first time and kicked me out to a BSOD that was so fast that I couldn't read the error message. After a little Googling I found some posts that said Vista x64 won't install on a machine with more than 3GB of memory without SP1 slipstreamed. I tried removing 6GB of my memory and knocking it down to 2GB, and strangely enough, it worked!
I managed to get all my updates and drivers installed but then ran into my second problem. I tried to install Daemon Tools which needs a reboot. Upon rebooting I found that it just blue screened again.
I had enough with screwing around with Windows so I decided that I would probably have better luck installing Ubuntu. The install went normally but I ran into a conflict with Ubuntu 8.10 and the proprietary Nvidia graphics driver. It seems that the setup tools that ship with the proprietary Nvidia driver was meant for an older version of Xorg than the one that comes with Ubuntu 8.10. At least I had a partially working computer.
As I've been writing this, I've been running a Vista x64 install from a disc that has SP1 slipstreamed. It seems to be working a lot better.
Computers piss me off sometimes.
